What Do Fashion Designers Do?

There are many different types of fashion designers, but the job description remains the same. A fashion designer is a person who develops designs for a range of products, including clothing, shoes, and accessories. The designer may also specialize in one particular style, such as men’s or women’s wear, or in accessories, such as scarves, hats, and eyewear. Depending on the company, they may be in charge of marketing or financial matters, too.

To create a successful product line, a fashion designer must make the clothes sell. Otherwise, they could sulk in obscurity. Many designers start out in entry-level jobs, which can be unremunerative and poorly defined. For example, they may find themselves hunting for 1970s-style articles or locating popular dance clubs. Although these early jobs may be difficult, the connections that they make are critical. During this time, most designers spend their days learning the trade and taking part-time jobs to pay their rent.

Fashion designers develop designs for clothing, shoes, and accessories by following trends. They first sketch their designs using paper and pencil, then rework the designs using computer-aided design software (CAD). They may also use models to determine the final look. Once the design is complete, the designer must go through a process of approval before the clothes are manufactured. Once approved, the products are then sold to consumers. A typical fashion designer spends about six months on one project.
